Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has conceded that he was not supposed to join the London club.
The Italy international said this ahead of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie with Lille on Tuesday. He moved to Stamford Bridge from Napoli in 2018 when Maurizio Sarri was the Blues manager.
But Jorginho has now revealed that he could have gone to Manchester City and would love to play for Pep Guardiola one day.
“A bid arrived and… you don’t know, man. I am not going to say it,” Jorginho told Brazilian Youtuber Ale Oliveira. “No, I am kidding. I was not supposed to come to Chelsea.
“I was supposed to have arrived at another club. Another English club. And then it happened as it happened and I arrived at Chelsea, which also, hey, with history, that is Chelsea, right, man.
“So with Chelsea everything happened very fast. When I saw it, I was already in London and I said ‘let’s go’.
Jorginho then added, “But it is not a secret. If you put it on the internet, you will find it. It is Manchester City.”
“I have [this dream]. I don’t know if it will [happen]. But yeah, he [Pep Guardiola] is a reference. When I was a kid, watching his Barcelona [team] win everything with Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta.”
Chelsea are highly unlikely to allow Jorginho join Man City – one of their biggest rivals for silverware – and also he’s one of their best players.
The 30-year-old’s trophy cabinet includes the UEFA Europa League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, Euro 2020 and the Coppa Italia.
Jorginho, who already has 42 senior caps for Italy, has made more than 500 professional appearances for club and country since emerging at Hellas Verona in 2010.
