Liverpool dealt Alexander-Arnold blow as Klopp reveals new captaincy order

Liverpool on Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold is not part of the Liverpool squad that has traveled to Portugal for today’s UEFA Champions League group stage match against FC Porto.

The England international played the full 90 minutes in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Brentford at the weekend but has not boarded a flight along with other players of the first-team.

Alexander-Arnold took part in open training at Kirkby earlier in the day on Monday only to not be among the squad that disembarked the team coach at their hotel in the evening.

It is still unclear at this stage the reason for this decision, with the Reds remaining tight-lipped over the fitness of the Liverpool defender.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool have adopted a new approach regarding the leaders at Anfield.

The players’ committee which is currently in place has been extended from three to six this campaign, with the German coach explaining the choices has been made by members of the first-team.

As a result, Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Alisson Becker are now set to take on new roles in the team.

Last season, they had a four-man group of internal ‘leaders’ in the team with the club skipper Jordan Henderson and vice-captain James Milner joined by Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum.

But the summer exit of Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain has forced a rethink at Liverpool.

Sharing an update on the situation, Liverpool boss Klopp said: “We had three captains in Hendo, Milly, Virg and the players voted for another three. “So that was won by Trent, Robbo and Alisson Becker.”
