With the Red Devils struggling through their first six games, suffering three defeats, a negative goal difference of minus three, and failing to score in their last two league matches, there is growing concern within the club.
Tottenham’s aggressive attack during the latest match left United’s coaching staff shocked, particularly by how easily Spurs broke through their defense. Some believe Spurs could have won by an even larger margin.
United’s players seemed to repeat their sluggish performance from the Europa League, where FC Twente managed a 1-1 draw after breaking through for an equalizer.
Just four days later, history repeated itself as Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven ran through United’s defense unchallenged, setting up a key moment in Tottenham’s dominant victory.
The coaching staff were stunned by Van de Ven’s unchecked run before assisting Brennan Johnson’s goal, with one source reportedly calling the defensive effort “pathetic.” There are concerns that if these issues persist, Ten Hag could lose his job.
Ten Hag focused on improving United’s defense in the summer transfer window, spending £107 million on defenders Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui, as well as £50 million on defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte from PSG.
However, Ugarte appeared unprepared for his Premier League debut on Sunday.
United’s next two matches, an away game against Porto in the Europa League and a Premier League clash with Aston Villa, are seen as crucial for Ten Hag’s future, despite his claims that the club’s leadership still supports him through the disappointing results.
Just four weeks ago, newly appointed CEO Omar Berrada publicly backed Ten Hag.
However, since then, United has won only two of their last six matches across all competitions, against relegation-threatened Southampton and League One side Barnsley.
With each defeat and underwhelming performance, Ten Hag’s support is dwindling, and it’s expected that the United board will make a final decision on his future after these next two games.
