Man Utd & Chelsea in talks to sign ex-Barcelona star for ‘reduced’ transfer fee

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly in discussions with Espanyol regarding a potential deal for Martin Braithwaite.

Both clubs have been actively seeking a new striker before the January transfer window closes at 11 pm on Thursday, but their efforts to secure a short-term solution have so far been unsuccessful.

Despite rejecting the opportunity to sign Karim Benzema, who is seeking to leave Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad this month, both Premier League clubs are now exploring the possibility of acquiring Braithwaite, according to reports from Madrid-based newspaper Marca.

The report suggests that negotiations are underway, with United and Chelsea aiming to secure the Danish international for a fee significantly less than his €7 million (£5.9m) buyout clause.

It is noted that Braithwaite could potentially leave Espanyol on a free transfer in the summer if the club achieves promotion back to La Liga.

However, if they remain in the Segunda Division, his release clause would decrease to €600,000 (£511,000).

After a less-than-fruitful stint at Barcelona, where he was transferred on an emergency basis for €18 million (£15 million) in February 2020 and released just 19 months later, Braithwaite joined Espanyol in September 2022.

Despite scoring 10 goals in 31 league games, he couldn’t prevent the club’s relegation from La Liga.

Currently performing well in the Segunda Division, the 32-year-old has netted 12 goals in 22 league appearances this season.

Braithwaite, who has also scored 10 goals in 69 appearances for Denmark, is actively vying for a place in their squad for Euro 2024 next summer.
