Since departing Monterrey, the former Sevilla, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain centre-back has been associated with several potential next steps, including a move to Serie A giants AC Milan.
Earlier this week, Spanish outlet Cadena SER reported that the 39-year-old had been offered the chance to join Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United at the start of 2026.
According to sources, discussions were only in the early stages and nothing had been agreed. “There are still looming doubts about whether the deal will be completed”, the report noted, via Fichajes.
However, a new update from ESPN states that United are not pursuing a deal for Ramos and that no conversations have occurred.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano also commented on the matter, saying: “I’m not aware of any contact between Sergio Ramos and Man United now.”
Instead, the Premier League side are prioritising younger signings, with those working behind the scenes at Old Trafford aiming to avoid bringing in players described as ‘ageing stars on inflated wages’.
Reports also suggest that United are considering adding a centre-back in the near future, with Elche defender David Affengruber mentioned as a possible target for 2026.
Nevertheless, the previously cited report indicates that United’s recruitment efforts are currently focused on bolstering central midfield and wing-back positions.
Some United fans may be disappointed by the club’s lack of interest in four-time Champions League winner Ramos, who nearly joined the team earlier in his career.
“Yes, I was close to playing for United,” he said in 2023, as per The Sun. “My father is a great fan of that team, but I stayed where I should, Real Madrid.”
He continued: “Despite everything, I maintain my admiration for the club, for the Premier League and for its players, because the pace of play is different, and it is a league from which we can all learn a lot. I was happy to stay in Madrid.”
