Man Utd in talks to hijack Liverpool’s move for Timo Werner

Manchester United hope to hijack Liverpool’s transfer move to sign Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner after opening talks with the player’s representatives over a move to the club.

The 24-year-old is set to leave Germany this summer and has made no secret of his desire to work with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are also believed to be keen on Werner but the coronavirus crisis has cast huge uncertainty over the summer window.

Jamie Carragher recently said that the Reds would have to ‘postpone’ their move for Werner, while Solskjaer conceded United would be looking to ‘exploit’ the situation to their own benefit.

According to Bild, that’s exactly what the Red devils are attempting as the German outlet are reporting that United have entered into discussions with Werner’s agent.

Chelsea are also said to have held talls, though the Blues have previously been reported to have held talks for his signature.

The news will come as a blow for Liverpool but the Reds still lead the chase to sign the German forward.

However, Werner’s preference remains to move to Anfield but Jurgen Klopp must convince the board to sanction a big money move when he already has players like Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi at his disposal.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern but he revealed this year that he wants to play for Liverpool, who he described as the best club in the world.

‘I know Liverpool is the best team in the moment in the world,’ said Werner. ‘When you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud.

‘But in case of that, it’s a pleasure but I know at Liverpool there are a lot of good players and I know I have to improve myself to learn much more things to get on this level to play there.’
