Manchester United will reportedly not stand in the way of Edinson Cavani moving to Barcelona and would even be willing to forgo a transfer fee.
The Uruguayan forward has emerged as a top target for new Barcelona manager Xavi as he looks to add more firepower to his frontline, with the club starved of options after Sergio Aguero was forced to retire.
Cavani has struggled with injuries this campaign, limiting him to start just two Premier League matches, and a move to Camp Nou could suit all parties.
According to Marca, the former PSG striker – who only has six months left on his contract – would jump at the opportunity to join Barcelona and personal terms should not be a problem despite the club struggling financially.
United, meanwhile, have no issue with letting Cavani leave – particularly with the player having played just 214 minutes of Premier League football all season.
There is a feeling that allowing the veteran to move to Barca will not harm the squad, but it will shave a large chunk of money off the wage bill, and the Red devils would be prepared to let him leave for nothing.
Cavani also realises that, even when fit, he is unlikely to be involved in the regular game time he desires heading into a year in which he is desperate to help Uruguay qualify for the World Cup before playing in the tournament for the last time at the backend of 2022.
Although United are happy to facilitate the move, there could be a delay on Barcelona’s end as the club – who are struggling financially – look to offload players.
Philippe Coutinho, Luuk de Jong and Umtiti are among the many high-earning players deemed surplus to requirement by the new manager Xavi and who Barca want to get off their wage bill.
But finding buyers for such highly paid players has been tough and Barcelona simply cannot afford to sign Cavani until they have made room in the squad and reduced their salary spending.
