Mason Mount cruelly denied Man Utd club record in Brentford draw

Mason Mount’s goal in the 96th minute against Brentford almost set a new record for Manchester United, but their hopes were dashed by Kristoffer Ajer’s late equalizer.

Despite a lackluster performance at the Gtech Community Stadium, Erik ten Hag’s team seemed poised for victory when Mount scored late in stoppage time, only to see it slip away as United failed to maintain their lead.

Ten Hag has come under heavy fire for his team’s lackluster showing, as the hosts completely dominated the match from start to finish.

Brentford’s dominance is highlighted by an astounding statistic, setting a league record for the season. According to Squawka, Brentford became the first team to register over 80 touches inside the opponent’s box in a single league match this season.

Despite their overwhelming control, Brentford managed only five shots on target out of their staggering 31 attempts, leaving room for self-critique for not capitalizing fully on their opportunities against United.

Following the match, Ten Hag admitted that Manchester United did not merit a victory, expressing his frustration with his team’s performance.

“We didn’t deserve to win,” he stated. “But if you’re winning, you have to accept it. Typically, we are very good in such situations,” The Dutchmen explained.

Despite the outcome, one bright spot for Ten Hag was Mount’s goal-scoring performance, breaking an eight-match goal drought in the Premier League for his new club.

Mount’s goal would have carried extra significance had United managed to secure the win, potentially setting a noteworthy club record.

If United had claimed all three points, Mount would have clinched a record fifth ‘Fergie Time’ victory in a single season, surpassing the four achieved in the 2018/19 campaign. Interestingly, neither of these campaigns occurred under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Since Steve Bruce initiated the era of ‘Fergie Time’ with a dramatic goal against Sheffield Wednesday 31 years ago, United have netted an impressive total of 47 stoppage-time goals, with the anticipation of a late goal particularly notable during Sir Alex’s reign.
