Jose Mourinho presented Scott McTominay with a candlestick holder after creating his own award during Manchester United’s end-of-season ceremony, according to MUTV presenter Andy Goldstein.
Mourinho was unhappy that McTominay, who had made a superb first-team breakthrough in the 2017-18 campaign, was not going to receive an award that evening.
So the former United head coach made it known that he wanted to give McTominay special recognition for his impressive displays by creating the ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’ award in the middle of the ceremony.

But Goldstein has revealed that organisers were forced to improvise after Mourinho’s last-minute request, which meant McTominay had to pose holding a candlestick holder.
‘When I was doing the Man United Player of the Year awards for MUTV, and he was manager, we were doing the live show in a studio next to the awards,’ Goldstein told talkSPORT.
‘You’ve got the bog-standard awards like the Matt Busby Award, Player of the Year but we got wind of the fact on the night that Jose wanted to make up his own award and give an award out.
‘I don’t mean in the afternoon of the awards ceremony, I mean during the evening. The evening started at 8pm, and at about 9:30pm we got wind of the fact that Jose wanted to give out an award. Maybe it was earlier but it was halfway through the night.
‘It was the Jose Mourinho Player of the Season Award, which Scott McTominay won.
‘But with an award, you need a trophy. So they ended up giving Scott McTominay a candlestick holder. It was long, silver and had a little bend in it – that was all they could find.
‘I don’t know if Scott McTominay knows he won a candlestick holder.’
Goldstein also accused Mourinho of casting a ‘black cloud’ over the Red devils during his time at the club.
‘He doesn’t bring any happiness to any club, no players want to play for him. I wouldn’t want him near my club,’ said Goldstein.
‘Spurs and Chelsea fans have seen it, he brings a black cloud to the club. I’m not just talking about the players – I’m talking about the tea lady, the people in production of the TV station, everyone. I’m talking from first-hand experience.”
‘I couldn’t handle that again, it was horrible. He was horrible to me, it was just Jose being Jose.’
