Michael Owen was left upset by Jesse Lingard’s decision not to wildly celebrate his winning goal for Manchester United against West Ham on Sunday, saying the ‘poor’ choice from the player let himself down.
Lingard came off the bench and curled in a spectacular goal in the 89th minute to give United a 2-1 win, the victory was also thanks to a late penalty save from David de Gea.
The England international spent the second half of last campaign on loan at West Ham, scoring nine goals in 16 matches in a fantastic spell at the club which reignited his career.

As such, he opted not to celebrate excessively, despite the goal which helped make up for his mistake which cost the club in their Champions League defeat to Young Boys.
However, Owen was not impressed, saying he ‘can’t believe’ that a player would choose not to celebrate a goal, whatever the circumstances.
‘The finish is absolutely sublime,’ Owen told Premier League Productions. ‘The only thing that is poor about the whole scenario is that he doesn’t celebrate.
‘If he didn’t want to score, if he’s not that happy don’t pull the trigger, pass the ball, if that’s the case. ‘It’s the only thing that lets him down there, because everything else is absolutely spectacular.’
Lingard was given a loud round of applause from the West Ham supporters when he was warming up during the game and appreciated the support he got in London during his time there, which meant a muted celebration was appropriate.
‘It was a great reception from the West Ham fans. I had a brilliant time here, but I had to do my bit today,’ he told MUTV.
‘They supported me in the loan spell and gave me a great reception, so it was only right to pay them back.’
