Reece James has shed light on his subdued celebration after scoring an incredible free-kick during his first international start since 2022.

It came as little surprise to see James in the starting eleven for England’s clash with Latvia, and the right-back justified Tuchel’s trust with a flawless free-kick that opened the scoring at Wembley.
Despite the brilliance of his goal, fans and commentators like Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon couldn’t help but notice James’s lack of excitement. His calm and reserved reaction stood out, raising curiosity about the motivation behind it.
After the match, James finally addressed his reaction, explaining the true reason for his low-key celebration. To the disappointment of some fans, it turned out to be far less mysterious than they had anticipated.
“Relaxed celebration? I was surprised it went in… but looking at the replay it was probably tough for the keeper to get there,” James said in his post-match interview.
Tuchel was full of praise for James in his post-match interview, explaining it was not a surprise to see him hit the levels he did.
“I know Reecey, the foot and the quality he has is amazing. He has every right to be proud and happy,” Tuchel told ITV.
Tuchel also confirmed he has no worries about James’ fitness, with the Chelsea defender finally appearing to put his injury woes behind him after assuring fans he was ‘fully available’ last week.
“He’s in excellence shape. He looks sharp. The quality… there cannot be any doubt,” he added.
James has made 11 Premier League and two Conference League appearances for Chelsea this campaign which is already more than he managed in the entirety of last season.
