Solskjaer sends strong transfer message to Man Utd board after City title win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conceded Manchester United need to strengthen their team if they’re to overhaul Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title next campaign.

United’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester confirmed City’s title win in 2020/21, with Guardiola’s side now with a 10-point lead with three matches left.

The Red devils are still in pole position to finish second and secure Champions League football — and could claim their first trophy under Solskjaer if they win the Europa League — but Solskjaer said United need to ‘take the next step’.

Weaknesses in their squad depth were well exposed against Leicester after Solskjaer was forced to make 10 changes to his side, due to the fixture schedule.

And the Norwegian told BT Sport after the 2-1 defeat that United’s team must be strengthened in the upcoming summer window.

“If we want to take up the challenge with them we need to strengthen our squad,” he said when asked about the battle with Man City.

“Congratulations to them. They have had a fantastic season. I am very pleased with my boys that have made it to the last 10 days with a Manchester City side ahead of us that are lauded as the best in Europe.

“We want to take the next step and it might be that we need a couple more to strengthen the squad.”

On the Leicester game, Solskjaer added: “We started off slow as you might expect because they have not had any time to prepare for the game but after they scored we had nothing to lose. We played some very good stuff and I was pleased with it.

“You see the leadership with Nemanja. Mason looked like a seasoned professional and he is only 19. We have not had too much time to prepare and we went into half-time pleased out didn’t get out of the traps and they got a goal from a corner that should have been a throw.”
