Barcelona’s Torres and Enrique’s 22-year-old daughter Sira Martinez, who is a professional showjumper, started dating last year, though they didn’t announce their relationship until January.
Speaking ahead of Spain’s World Cup opening game against Costa Rica, Enrique was asked which player in the squad was most similar to him.
“That’s very easy: it’s Mr Ferran Torres. Otherwise, my daughter will come after me and chop off my head,” Enrique joked.
Despite the family connection, the former Barcelona boss said he had a healthy professional relationship with Torres and was under no obligation to play him.
Speaking to reporters the following day, Torres explained that Enrique was “like a father” to him off the field, but on it he was strictly his manager and nothing more.
“I think the coach and I, we know how to differentiate between when it’s family and when we are manager and player,” the former Man City star said.
“I think we have to get on with it in a natural way, just that and we’re getting along fine.”
Torres has played nine games for Spain this year and is expected to start on Wednesday.
