However, the now 38-year-old hasn’t always had it easy.
Reflecting on his career, Suarez named former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos and ex-Chelsea defender Thiago Silva as his toughest opponents.
Ramos was the first player Suarez identified as his toughest opponent. The two frequently faced off during their time at Barcelona and Madrid, respectively.
Suarez joined Camp Nou in 2014 and spent six years with the Catalan giants. Alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, he dominated La Liga and engaged in fierce battles with Real Madrid.
Ramos made a lasting impact on Suarez. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, as quoted by ESPN, Suarez revealed that Ramos was one of the toughest defenders he has faced.
“Sergio Ramos is the toughest opponent I have come up against. He is very strong, has a lot of experience, and is a very competitive player. That is why I value so much the goal I scored against Madrid in the game at the Camp Nou.”
Ramos has enjoyed a stellar career. Starting with Sevilla, he transferred to Santiago Bernabeu in 2005 and spent 16 years at Madrid, solidifying his place as one of the greatest central defenders of all time.
Suarez’s second toughest opponent was Thiago Silva. Although they never played in the same domestic league at the same time, they faced each other numerous times in European and international competitions.
These encounters left a significant impression on Suarez. In an interview with the Metro, he was full of praise for the Brazilian defender.
“A defender that has given me trouble and that I have faced several times was Thiago Silva. He is an admirable defender who I have always liked.”
Silva has had an illustrious career with clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. Currently, at 40 years old, he continues to play in his homeland with Fluminense, showing no indication of retiring anytime soon.
