Why Galatasaray’s first goal against Man Utd ‘should not have stood’

Galatasaray’s initial goal against Manchester United is said to have been questionable under a relatively obscure rule.

The Red Devils suffered a significant setback in their Champions League qualification aspirations on Wednesday, concluding with a 3-3 draw against the Turkish giants in a captivating match.

Alejandro Garnacho initiated the scoring for Erik ten Hag’s team, followed by Bruno Fernandes extending their lead with an impressive long-range shot.

Hakim Ziyech then dampened United’s morale with a bending free-kick that eluded Andre Onana in goal.

However, beIN Sports contends that Ziyech’s goal should not have been allowed, asserting that all attacking players must maintain a distance of at least one meter from the defensive wall until the ball is in play.

Galatasaray reportedly had two players within the prohibited distance, standing just 61 centimeters away, rendering Ziyech’s goal potentially invalid.

Despite Scott McTominay later reinstating United’s two-goal advantage in the second half, Ziyech managed to beat Onana again with another free-kick. Karem Akturkoglu then completed the comeback, leaving United in a precarious position.

Had Ziyech’s initial goal been disallowed, it could have significantly influenced United’s standing in Group A.

Now, United faces the imperative task of defeating Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and relying on favorable results elsewhere to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
