Bayern Munich fuel Wenger rumours by calling shock press conference

Bayern Munich have sent Arsenal fans into a frenzy by announcing that a shock press conference will take place on Friday.

The German giants appointed Niko Kovac as their new head coach in the summer and the 47-year-old got off to a good start, leading the team to seven wins on the bounce at the start of the campaign.

However, Bayern’s form has dried up in recent weeks with draws against Augsburg and Ajax and comprehensive defeats against Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Rumours coming out of the club claim that Kovac is set for an exit, with Arsene Wenger and Zinedine Zidane on a shortlist of possible candidates to take over from the Croatian.

And the news that Bayern have called a sudden press conference for 11am on Friday has taken the media by surprise.

President Uli Hoeness, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic will be leading the press conference. The last time this happened was to announce Jupp Heynckes’ return as head coach. Wenger, who stepped down as Arsenal manager in the summer, announced this week that he plans to return to management soon.

Le Parisien claims Wenger is interested in taking over at Bayern but the Frenchman played down speculation linking him with the job.

‘It’s important that Hoeness and Rummenigge organise the transition,’ Wenger told Bild earlier this week.

‘I think the power should stay within ex players. People like Philipp Lahm and Oliver Kahn, it’s important that they take over. Football lives within you. You don’t learn that at university.’

On whether the Bayern job interests him, Wenger said: ‘That’s not a topic for me. Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge trusted Niko Kovac and they have to hold on to him.’
