Edinson Cavani was reportedly unhappy with Manchester United’s request to give his No.7 jersey to summer signing Jadon Sancho.
Sancho completed his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window but has struggled to make an impact for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Having worn the No.7 shirt for the duration of his time at Dortmund, Sancho was expected to take up the same number after his arrival at Old Trafford.
According to The Athletic, Sancho was initially offered the No.7 shirt last year while the Red devils were still negotiating a fee with the Bundesliga side before the move broke down.
The report claims that United kept their offer of the No.7 jersey in the summer, but, Cavani was ‘a little put out’ by the club’s attempts to take it from him despite their desire to see him stay at the theatre of dreams for another campaign.
Cavani then gave up the No.7 after Ronaldo’s surprise return to Old Trafford and took up the No.21 shirt.
‘I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again,’ Ronaldo said after his return to United. ‘I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi for this incredible gesture.’
Cavani was left out of United’s squad for their 2-0 defeat to Man City on Saturday due to injury and the Uruguayan forward has not linked up with his national team squad during the international break.
Sancho, meanwhile, failed to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad ahead of England’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania & San Marino.
