For Hojlund, the goal was a breakthrough, ending a concerning 22-match drought. However, his celebration sparked controversy.
The Danish striker initially gestured thumbs-up to the United fans present in Leicester, only to turn it into a thumbs-down motion.
The primary source of backlash, however, was his use of a ‘cut-throat’ gesture inspired by the Gladiator film series, which some fans criticized as promoting violent behavior.
Despite the uproar, the Daily Mail has reported that the FA has taken a lenient stance on the matter and does not plan to instruct Hojlund to stop using the celebration.
Following the match, Hojlund spoke to Danish media outlet Tipsbladet, expressing gratitude for the support he has received from his teammates, including fellow Danes Christian Eriksen and Patrick Dorgu, along with a legendary Danish figure at Manchester United.
He explained: “Peter [Schmeichel] helps me occasionally and listens to how I’m feeling, both when things are going well and things are going badly.
“I wouldn’t call him a father figure but he helps a lot, because he’s been through it before. He knows what it means to play for Manchester United as a Dane. It’s nice to have someone to spar with on that front.
“Christian also helps me and the others. But, if there are other people who come and want a little help, I’m available. Both for everyone here and Patrick and Chido.”
