First Liverpool player decides he wants to leave club after Arne Slot announcement

Just days after Arne Slot’s appointment as Liverpool manager, the first departure under his tenure appears imminent.

Slot has been expected to replace Jurgen Klopp since April, with Klopp even creating a new chant for his successor during his emotional farewell at Anfield on Sunday.

Slot’s official appointment was confirmed on Monday, with Liverpool stating he will take over on June 1, pending a work permit.

Alongside Klopp, Thiago Alcantara, Adrian, and Joel Matip are set to leave Liverpool, and there are reports of another potential exit.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is seeking a move this summer.

Kelleher, who made 26 starts in all competitions during the 2023/24 season, had his most active season yet, including playing every minute in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup triumph and securing a clean sheet in the 1-0 final win over Chelsea.

However, with Alisson Becker reclaiming his starting position in April after recovering from injury, Kelleher is likely to remain a backup under Slot. Kelleher, who wants to be a first-choice goalkeeper, is expected to push for a transfer when the window reopens.

The 25-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Ringmahon Rangers at 16, is under contract until 2026. Liverpool is seeking a fee of around £20 million for him.

While no specific clubs have been mentioned, Kelleher was close to joining Wolves last summer before Klopp halted the deal.

It appears Slot may not prevent Kelleher’s departure, and one of his initial tasks could be finding a new second-choice goalkeeper.
