Ben Foster names Underwhelming Man Utd star that could have been world’s best

Former Manchester United midfielder Anderson could have become the best player in the world, if only he had cared about doing so, says Ben Foster.

The Watford keeper played with Anderson at United and rated his talents as highly as imaginable, but says the Brazilian star did not have the attitude to match.

The midfielder made 181 appearances for the Red devils in all competitions, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League, but Foster says it could have been so much more, if he had been bothered.

‘He could have been the best player in the world at one point, I promise you he could have,’ Foster told the UTD Podcast of the Brazilian. ‘Everybody would say that he could have been the best in the world at one point.

‘But he just didn’t care, he didn’t care about anything. Honestly, he didn’t care about anything. But you put him on a pitch and he was like that.

‘Carlos Tevez was the same sort of thing. Put him on the pitch and oh my god. There has got to be something in being South American, there’s got to be something in that.’

Brazilian brothers Rafael and Fabio also played with Anderson at United and in their joint autobiography, The Sunshine Kids, they also echoed Foster’s thoughts.

‘I will say something about Anderson – if he had been a professional football player, he could have been the best in the world,’ wrote Rafael. ‘I’m saying this was all seriousness. I don’t know if he ever took anything seriously.

‘He just loved life in such an easy and casual way. In some ways that was a quality. It was what made him so popular and one of the most popular players at the club. But he would just eat whatever was put in front of him.’

Anderson left the club in 2015 and has now retired, last playing for Turkish club Adana Demirspor in 2020.
