‘He didn’t listen’ – Tuchel trolls Werner for ignoring instructions

Tuchel on Werner

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed the mid-game tactical instructions he gave Timo Werner during the win over Tottenham and even poked fun at the German star.

Although Werner failed to net for the 13th Premier League match in a row, but he did manage to win the decisive penalty from which Jorginho scored the only goal of the London derby.

During the break in play before the penalty, Tuchel called Werner over and gave him some instructions to get him more involved in the match.

One of Tuchel’s big priorities since taking over from Frank Lampard is getting Werner firing again, though he couldn’t resist teasing the player after he failed to find the net again.

Asked exactly what told Werner during their mid-game chat, Tuchel told Astro SuperSport: ‘To score the second one and he didn’t listen! [laughs].

‘No, no, we had some tactical advice regarding his position. He was even moving too much, we wanted him to stay a little bit longer on his position.

‘Then we could find him in a more open position in the last line. ‘That was just a quick tactical chat to give him some instructions.’

Despite Werner’s goal drought, he will not be getting an opportunity to end his poor form from the penalty spot any time soon with Tuchel saying the striker was not in contention to take one.

He explained: ‘The guys took some penalties in the last nine days after training. ‘We have Willy Caballero and the guys pushing the penalty takers to be serious, and if you are not then you don’t score.

‘So you get a good picture of who is capable and today it was Mason [Mount] and Jorginho on the sheet: we put the two names and I said to Jorginho just before the match if he feels confident to take a penalty, and he said clearly yes.

‘So we trusted him, but I did not discuss with him how to take it.’
