Ian Wright criticises David Luiz for throwing Emery under the bus after United win

Ian Wright believes David Luiz ‘went a bit deep’ as he appeared to throw Unai Emery under the bus after Arsenal’s win over Manchester United.

Luiz produced an assured individual performance on Wednesday night as goals from Nicolas Pepe and Papastathopoulos secured a win for Mikel Arteta.

The result saw Arsenal move to tenth in the Premier League, while the Red devils are now five points behind Chelsea.

Arsenal’s players have thrown their support behind Arteta after a poor start to the campaign under Emery, and Luiz aimed a swipe at the latter.

The Brazilian admitted that Arteta has brought ‘happiness’ back to a dressing room which has been lacking in confidence.

‘We have to be honest and admit physically we are not ready, but you have to show heart and this team is ready to change a lot of things,’ Luiz told BT Sport.

‘Mikel Arteta is a great coach, he knows football, he was a great player.

‘In life when you are happy the results can be totally different. I always like to use the mantra, if you sleep happy you can sleep for hours, it’s better than sleeping sad for eight hours.

‘If you work with happiness and believing what you are doing it is totally different, so I’m happy with everybody.

Reacting to Luiz’s comments, Arsenal legend Wright said: ‘It seems to me like he’s saying something about the old manager and maybe the way that he set them up, the way they trained – maybe they didn’t enjoy it as much.

‘He’s saying he was sad, when you’re happy you can sleep for hours and stuff like that, I don’t know. It went a bit deep for me!

‘But what it says to me is that they’re obviously a lot happier than they were.

‘It’s good to listen to him, because he’s talking about the youngsters understanding what it takes now to be a player at a club trying to achieve stuff, how hard you have to work to get that and how hard you have to work to maintain that.’
