Kepa Arrizabalaga was shocked at being dropped by Frank Lampard but expects to start for Chelsea in their next Premier League game against Manchester United.
Lampard made the decision to drop under-performing goalkeeper Kepa for Chelsea’s game away to Leicester City before the winter break, with Willy Caballero starting in goal.
Chelsea made Kepa the most expensive goalie in history when they signed him for £72million from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in 2018 but he has struggled this campaign.
According to The Sun, Kepa was ‘stunned’ at being dropped for Caballero, even though the Chelsea boss had warned him that his performances need to improve.
And it is claimed the Spanish goalkeeper expects to return for the game against struggling Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
Kepa is reported to have held talks with Frank Lampard this week and is eager to respond to his axing in a good way and rediscover his form.
Chelsea enjoyed an outstanding start to the campaign under Lampard and, while results have fallen away of late, the club still remain in the top four.
Explaining his decision to drop Kepa Arrizabalaga for the Leicester game, Lampard said: ‘It’s a decision I have not taken lightly.
‘They train together, they are are close and it’s one I thought I’d make for this game. I trust in Willy, he’s very professional.’
The blues are six points and four places above Manchester United in the Premier League ahead of Monday’s match in London.
