Manchester City have moved into major position over a possible £50million signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho.
Liverpool had been considered favourites for the Italy international who has impressed this campaign in Napoli’s midfield.
However, City have held productive talks with his representative Joao Santos over two meetings in recent weeks and hope to have convinced the Italian of a move to the Etihad.
Napoli have offered the 26-year-old a new contract while Manchester United are also interested in the Brazilian-born playmaker, who moved to Italy at the age of 17 and has five international caps.
City made a bid for Shakhtar Dontesk’s Fred in January and he was keen to join but United’s willingness to outbid them for the Brazilian has seen the value of the deal escalate.

However, Pep Guardiola has been impressed with Jorginho this season and recognises he could fit into the style of Manchester City.
The City boss also wants to add a defender, Eder Militao of Sao Paulo, while Leicester forward Riyad Mahrez is also still in their summer plans in addition to a more recognised striker.
