James Milner berated Virgil van Dijk on the pitch for his part in Manchester United’s opening goal against Liverpool on Monday.
Jadon Sancho showed outstanding composure to put United in front with a smart turn and finish in the 16th minute.
But while they celebrated, Milner could be seen raging at Van Dijk with television cameras catching him telling the Dutchman, ‘go out to him’.
In the build up to Sancho’s goal, Van Dijk stayed in a central position in front of Liverpool’s goal with both hands behind his back, which allowed the United attacker to pick his spot with a side-footed finish.
‘If you analyse Van Dijk here, he’s been sloppy all season,’ former United captain Roy Keane told Sky Sports during the half-time break.
‘He’s got to get out. He’s not moved his feet. It was excellent, the goal was coming.’
Liverpool’s struggles continued after the break as Anthony Martial, who was brought on as a substitute, put Marcus Rashford through on goal and the United star finished low past Alisson.
During the second half, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who was working as a co-commentator for Sky Sports’ coverage, noticed that Milner and Van Dijk were continuing to argue.
‘Something’s going on with Milner and Van Dijk,’ Carragher said just after the hour mark.
‘They’ve been at each other for the past 15 minutes. ‘Milner wasn’t happy with Van Dijk for the first goal and they’re still having a go.’
