Piers Morgan launches attack on Lionel Messi over World Cup celebrations

Piers Morgan has told Argetina talisman Lionel Messi to stop gloating after a series of celebratory World Cup posts on social media.

The Argentine forward was the main man on Sunday as he guided his country to a first World Cup in 36 years after a mouthwatering encounter with France in Qatar.

Messi finally got his hands on the coveted World Cup trophy, winning by penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw with Didier Deschamps’ side, and he led Argentina’s celebrations post-match as he lifted the trophy and cemented his status as one of the greatest players of all time.

While football fans all over the world rejoiced that the 35-year-old had now completed the set of football prizes, TalkTV host Morgan wasn’t too impressed.

A long-time advocate that Messi’s rival Cristiano Ronaldo is, in fact, the greatest of all time, Morgan wasn’t impressed after taking a look at the player’s Instagram to see a flurry of celebratory posts.

Taking to Twitter, Morgan wrote: “Okay, Lionel. We get it, you won the World Cup. “You’re slightly over-egging the gloating soufflé now…”

He then attached a screenshot of Messi’ Instagram page, with the last six of his social media posts being about his World Cup win.

Among his posts are one of Messi sleeping with the trophy, as well as a picture that is now the most-liked Instagram post of all time.

One person replied Morgan: “Grow up.” While another added: “So sad it’s not CR7, huh? Get over it.”

As a third said: “You are embarrassing yourself just by saying that.” Meanwhile, another person joked: “Ok Piers we get it. You did an interview with Ronaldo.”

But Morgan wasn’t still done. In a previous tweet, he took aim at the Argentinian support in Buenos Aires during the team’s parade – while also firing shots at Messi again.

When ESPN posted a picture of the ‘estimated 4 MILLION people walking around the streets of Buenos Aires’, Morgan couldn’t help but aim a dig at the Paris Saint-Germain superstar.

He replied: “So? The city’s population is 15m – have the other 11m stayed inside because like me, they think Maradona is still the Argentinian GOAT?”

One person gave a reply: “That’s genuinely just delusion, lad.” As another added: “Stop embarrassing yourself, you don’t need to downplay Messi’s achievements because you prefer Ronaldo.”

While a third said: “Piers. Its okay to be happy for other people man. What’s all the negativity towards Messi? I know you’re better than this.”
