Mourinho, featured as a special guest on TNT Sport’s program, made a pointed comment regarding Wenger’s suggested modification to the offside rule, while Wenger was present at the match.
Currently serving as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Wenger has advocated for the ‘daylight’ principle. This rule would deem a player onside if any part of their body capable of scoring is in line with or behind the last defender.
Supported by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Wenger’s idea was piloted in Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands after its introduction in 2020.
According to The Times, Wenger is now presenting this proposal to the International FA Board, the body responsible for the laws of football.
And upon presenter Laura Woods suggesting she may bring Wenger over for post-match coverage, Mourinho said: “Ask him about what he wants to do with the offside, oh my God. Let me go before please.”
The comment sparked Woods and fellow pundits Steve McManaman & Ferdinand were into fits of laughter, with the latter exclaiming: “Jose!”
On the proposed law change, a FIFA spokesperson told The Times: “The discussion around changing the offside law is not new and it is not something we will see introduced at higher levels imminently.
“The idea was first discussed in 2020 as we felt it was something worth exploring and testing to see the effect it could have on the game. Fifa committed to trialling the amended offside law, favouring the attacker, which has been applied in selected youth competitions across Europe.
“We will continue with these trials, assess the results and discuss with all relevant stakeholders.”
