‘I was never frightened by Ronaldo’ – Gary Neville names toughest players he worked against

Gary Neville, the Manchester United icon, recently disclosed the trio of players he found most challenging during training sessions in his career.

With a staggering 602 games under his belt for United, Neville clinched an impressive 12 league titles and two Champions League trophies.

The adage ‘they don’t make them like that anymore’ aptly describes the one-club stalwart, who hung up his boots with a legacy of tenacity and dedication.

Neville, who witnessed the arrival and departure of some exceptional talents during his tenure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s renowned squads, often provided the backbone for stars like David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo on the right flank.

In a candid conversation with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold on The Overlap, Neville acknowledged Ronaldo as one of the most formidable opponents he encountered in practice sessions.

Narrowing down to just three names from a roster of legends was no small feat for Neville. In the interview, he revealed that the trio of Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Wayne Rooney posed the greatest challenge to him in training.

When asked whether he enjoyed coming up against a teammate, Neville said: “I played against Cristiano Ronaldo a couple of times where he came over to my side, it was tough.

“I don’t think he enjoyed it either though. At the time, he was quite young, and I was experienced.

“I wasn’t fazed by him because I’d played against him every day. I always say this, the best players I played against were in training – Giggs, Ronaldo, and Rooney.”
