Rangnick makes Man Utd coaching request as Carrick & McKenna await fate

Ralf Rangnick will speak to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna before deciding the make-up of his Manchester United staff but has requested at least one new coach.

He has agreed to take over the reins at Old Trafford temporarily until the end of the campaign, after which point he will take up a consultancy role at the club.

The Red devils are believed to have worked out a compensation package with Rangnick’s current team, Lokomotiv Moscow, and are now waiting on a work permit.

The appointment should be confirmed in the next 24-48 hours and while the German manager will not be in the dugout against Chelsea, but he should be in charge by the time Arsenal visit Old Trafford on Thursday.

He has already started working and planning, having been given access to training footage, and top of his list of priorities currently is deciding his backroom team.

According to The Athletic, he will meet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s old coaching staff in the coming days and assess them before deciding whether they still have a future at the club.

Carrick and McKenna are highly rated by United’s board – even though the latter is sometimes considered ‘schoolmasterly’ by the players – and there is a feeling that Rangnick could be a huge influence on them.

The German has a history of developing coaches and the club feel they have already invested a lot of time, resources and money into Carrick and McKenna and do not want to see it go to waste, with both of them potentially even joining the permanent manager’s staff next summer.

But Rangnick wants to stamp his own mark on the backroom team and even requested a new video analyst during discussions with United, which they have agreed to.

He will also bring in two of his trusted assistants, with Lars Kornetka – who worked with Rangnick at Hoffenheim, Schalke & RB Leipzig – set to join his long-time friend at Old Trafford as his right-hand man.
