The veteran midfielder extended his contract for another year last summer, and there had been speculation that he might remain under the guidance of his former teammate, Xabi Alonso, for another season.
However, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is set to play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu before officially leaving after the Club World Cup in the United States.
“I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next,” Modric said in a statement.
“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person.
“I’m proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
After falling short in both La Liga and the Champions League, Real Madrid are swiftly moving to strengthen their squad. They have already secured a deal for Dean Huijsen and are set to welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer.
With a new left-back also high on their list of priorities, Real Madrid are now reportedly eager to find a replacement for Luka Modric, who is departing after a legendary tenure at the club.
Their top target appears to be Vitinha, the talented Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal midfielder.
The midfielder, who previously played for Wolves, has established himself as one of the finest in the game. He has been a key figure in PSG’s impressive Champions League campaign, forming a formidable trio alongside Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz.
MARCA say Vitinha is at the top of Real’s wishlist and state that he “studied at the school” of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric and “is the best option” because “his age allows him to press without fear and be aggressive in stealing”.
Vitinha, a technically gifted midfielder known for his precise passing, remains under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2029, meaning any potential transfer would likely require a significant fee.
Several other midfielders have been linked as possible reinforcements, including Ballon d’Or winner and Manchester City standout Rodri, as well as Enzo Fernandez, Florian Wirtz, Nico Paz, Tijjani Reijnders, Franco Mastantuono, Angelo Stiller, and Hugo Larsson.
