Solskjaer ‘makes choice’ on Man Utd goalkeeper for Europa League final

Solskjaer on de Gea and Henderson

David de Gea is set to start for Manchester United ahead of Dean Henderson in their Europa League final, according to reports.

Henderson and De Gea have shared goalkeeping duties this campaign – something which has reportedly frustrated both keepers at times during the season.

The Englishman has played 25 matches in all competitions this campaign, although he had only started three Premier League games before March.

Henderson has started all the matches in the FA Cup, League Cup and was in goal for the first four Europa League ties, while between the start of the campaign and March, de Gea began all of the Premier League and Champions League matches apart from three games.

It appeared as though Henderson had ousted de Gea as the club’s first choice in March though. The Spaniard missed the Crystal Palace clash on March 3 due to what Solskjaer described as ‘personal reasons’ and the English keeper started the next eight Premier League games.

The 24-year-old was dropped for the Leicester City game on May 11 though, despite making a number of good saves against Aston Villa in the previous game.

Henderson returned against Liverpool two days later but endured a tough afternoon, as he could have done better with two of the goals scored by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And The Manchester Evening News claim that David De Gea is expected to start for United in the Europa League final on Wednesday, May 26 against Villarreal.

Although, Solskjaer said he is yet to make a decision twice this week. Speaking on Monday, the United manager said: “I think there are loads of difficult calls.

“The whole squad has contributed so much. It’s probably a different scenario with the ‘keepers than it’s normally been, because they’re both in and around the 30 [games] mark [this season].

“Both have done really well. It’s going to be difficult but I’ll have to make other ones as well.”

And it was a point he reiterated after confirming his team for the Fulham game on Tuesday night. Solskjaer said: “It was David’s turn to play, he has played in Europe and Dean Henderson mostly in the league. I will make up my mind after the last two league games [on who starts in the Europa League final].”
