Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United could sign a new striker despite Edison Cavani’s contract extension, opening the door to a transfer for Harry Kane.
United are one of several clubs interested in Kane, who has asked to leave Tottenham, though there had been suggestions the Red Devils’ priorities lay elsewhere having secured a new contract for Cavani.
The Uruguayan scored a superb lob against Fulham in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw but Solskjaer says Cavani’s presence would not prevent him from signing a new striker.
Asked if Cavani’s contract extension, and the club’s attacking options, means they will not sign a striker this summer, Solskjaer told Sky Sports: ‘We’re looking to strengthen the squad.
‘Of course there’s many, many, many things that you have to consider when you put a squad together. I am not saying that if Edi stays that means someone else in a forward position won’t come in.’

‘Yeah Edi signed, but how many good strikers have we had at this club? I can’t say we’re not signing a striker, of course not, because we’re building and working towards a better squad.
‘We’re top three two years on the bounce but we’re still nowhere near where we want to be. So hopefully we’ll end up with a stronger squad when we start next season and be more consistent and challenge the ones in front of us.’
When quizzed by Sky Sports if he would be interested in Kane, Solskjaer continued: ‘I can’t talk about players from other teams.
‘I think you know me well enough, and I don’t think that’s very respectful of any team, any players. ‘There’s loads of good players out there. I could say Messi is interesting, or Ronaldo, but I can’t talk about them, you know.’
