Why Man Utd want to sign Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic in January

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is keen on signing Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in January due to the player’s tactical flexibility.

The American star wants to leave Stamford Bridge after being ostracised by Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter this campaign.

The winger is in his fourth year at Chelsea since a £58m move from Dortmund but injuries and managerial turmoil have contributed to a poor stint with the Blues.

Nevertheless, there’s no doubting Pulisic’s quality and he showed that during a goalless draw with England on Friday, when he was named the Man of the Match.

The Red Devils made an attempt to sign Pulisic last summer but they decided in favour of a far more expensive move for Ajax star Antony, who joined in an £85m deal.

But, Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit has left the team short in attack with Anthony Martial the only centre forward available to Ten Hag.

Though Pulisic is more of a traditional winger, the attacker can play on both flanks and in a central position.

According to ESPN, it’s Pulisic’s tactical flexibility that has attracted Ten Hag to his availability and United are preparing to make a loan move for him in January.

United are looking for a short-term solution to their issues in attack, as a long-term striker is expected to be the club’s priority next summer.

Whether Chelsea would allow Pulisic joining a direct rival remains to be seen but United would cover all of the American’s wages, which are reported to be around £130,000-a-week.
