REVEALED: How Tottenham or Chelsea could miss out on Champions League if they finish fourth

Despite top four in England looking nearly finalised, there is a nightmare happening for either Tottenham or Chelsea that could see one of the both teams miss out on Champions League football even if they finish fourth.

Should both London teams finish above Liverpool in the top four, and Liverpool and Arsenal both win the Champions League and Europa League respectively, England would have six teams qualified for the European competition next season.

But UEFA rules state that an association is allowed no more than five teams in the Champions League, meaning the team who finishes in the fourth position in the Premier League would drop into the Europa League.

However, there is only a very slim chance that this could happen with Chelsea needing a lot of luck to finish above Liverpool and Tottenham this campaign.

Chelsea currently are six points behind third-placed Liverpool and have a match in hand.

Chelsea still need to host Liverpool in the English top flight but even if the blues secure a victory at Stamford Bridge, it is unlikely to move them above the Reds due to their inferior goal difference.

Meanwhile, the Blues also sit five points behind London rivals Tottenham.

England are the third highest ranked association in the Champions League.
The first four associations each have four teams qualify.

UEFA recently confirmed that Premier League top four teams will qualify directly into the group stage.

The winners of the Champions League and Europa League are given an additional entry if they do not qualify for the competition through their domestic league.

Liverpool and Arsenal will find out this week whether they will earn a spot in their respective European finals in May.
