Chelsea stars ‘hugely impressed’ by Billy Gilmour amid exit link

Chelsea’s first-team players have been blown away by Billy Gilmour’s recent displays in training amid speculation the youngster could leave the club in the January window on a loan deal.

Gilmour burst onto the scene last campaign but his outstanding debut season was cut short due to a knee injury and he only recently returned as a substitute in the win at Sevilla.

Gilmour was the man-of-the-match in his full Champions League debut versus Krasnodar but there’s been rumours that the Scottish midfielder will leave this winter.

Rangers have been mooted as a possible option, with the player determined to secure regular playing time in order to secure a place in Scotland squad for next summer’s European Championships.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard described Gilmour as a ‘fabulous little player’ but played down rumours the youngster could be on his way to the club.

‘There is nothing in it from our side,’ Gerrard said. ‘He’s a fabulous little player but there has been no contact between the clubs or the managers.

‘I think that’s just people putting two and two together and looking for stories.’

According to The Telegraph, Frank Lampard is yet to decide whether or not to allow him leave on loan, because Gilmour could still play an important role for the blues this season.

The report claims members of Chelsea’s first-team have been ‘hugely impressed’ by Gilmour in training and his performances at Cobham could be enough to sway Lampard this January window.

‘I thought Billy was outstanding,’ Lampard said. ‘The way he played today and how he trains, I see him growing with us.

‘He’s going to be a Chelsea player so it’s just about making sure the pathway is right for him. ‘He made that pathway right last season and then got injured at the wrong time but playing like he did today, he’s got a lot to offer us.’
