Tammy Abraham scored his 13th goal of the season for Chelsea on Tuesday night against Lille and Rio Ferdinand believes there is a ‘tremendous amount’ more to come for the youngster.
The 22-year-old opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge as they booked their place in the Champions League knockout stage with a 2-1 victory over the French side.
It appeared to be a simple finish for the England forward as he tapped home a Willian cross from within the six-yard box.
However, Ferdinand says that it is his positioning to get into that area and how easy he made it look, shows that he will be a prolific goal-scorer for years to come. And that it gives the Chelsea striker an edge over Marcus Rashford.
‘He’s going to score a tremendous amount of goals because what he does is he wants to be in between the sticks, he wants to be in the centre of the goals to score goals,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.
‘He’s somebody who’s hungry and got a desire to score. ‘It’s a very good finish, it’s clean and clinical. He makes it look easy, it’s not an easy finish.
‘What I love about Tammy is his first instinct, his first thought is “get me in there, get me in there to hurt the opposition, get me in there to score goals” ‘It’s the positioning, some people will tell [Marcus] Rashford to get in that position and he’ll score five, six, seven, eight goals a season more.
‘This kid here, that’s all he wants to do, that’s an element of his game that doesn’t need working on. He’s scored goals at every level and he’s brought it into the first team.’
Tammy Abraham is playing in the Champions League for the first time in his career and scored his second European goal of the campaign on Tuesday night.
He cannot wait to have a first crack at the knockout stages and surprisingly thanked Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta for giving him tips on goal-scoring.
‘Very excited, we came into the game knowing we needed to win today and thankfully we did,’ said Abraham of beating Lille.
‘I can’t wait for the next round. ‘For me it was just about getting in the box, this guy’s [Azpilicueta] always telling me “run across the goal” and that’s whay I did, luckily for me I was in the right place at the right time.’
