Furious Lampard slams VAR over Harry Maguire ‘headlock’

Frank Lampard aimed a furious broadside at VAR official Stuart Attwell after Chelsea were denied a penalty against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Attwell failed to ask referee Martin Atkinson to take a look at the pitch-side monitor after Cesar Azpilicueta was blatantly wrestled to the floor by Harry Maguire.

Lampard blasted: “I think it was a clear penalty. I didn’t see it at the time from where I was stood. It was a hard call for the referee. But why didn’t the VAR bring it to his attention?

“VAR was much too quick to move on. If the referee sees it then he gives a penalty. The frustrating thing is that referees had been using the monitors this season.

“That’s how it should be because it is up to the person on the pitch to take responsibility. For some reason they have stopped doing it – and I can’t understand why.

“I don’t think the referee could see the headlock. So he should have been given the chance to review it. If he sees it on the monitor then he gives a penalty.”

The Red devils have failed to win any of their opening three home matches in the Premier League for the first time since 1972.

However, It was a game of few opportunities, but Marcus Rashford was denied two times by good saves from Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt his team did enough to take the three points, he said: “The boys started a bit slowly but after the first 20 minutes I think we were the only team that was going to win it.

“It was two good teams out there and there weren’t too many chances. But their keeper has made two good saves from Marcus and overall I am happy with the players.”
