Getafe president reveals Greenwood preference over Man Utd return

Angel Torres, president of Getafe, asserts that Mason Greenwood, currently on loan from Manchester United, is eager to extend his stay with the Spanish club for another season.

Greenwood made the move to Getafe towards the end of the summer transfer window, with United deciding, based on their internal inquiry, that the 22-year-old should resume his career elsewhere following his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault.

In February of last year, all charges against Greenwood were dismissed. United had contemplated reintegrating him into Erik ten Hag’s squad, but faced significant backlash from supporters regarding his potential return.

Since his arrival at Getafe, Greenwood has displayed exceptional form, tallying five goals and five assists this season.

Recently, United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, declined to dismiss the idea of Greenwood returning to Old Trafford. However, Torres is convinced that Greenwood is inclined to prolong his stay in La Liga.

‘They asked us about it, there was a lot of talk about the issue of abuse and we found out what had happened and I said, ‘let’s go’,’ Torres told Spanish radio station Cope.

‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year.

‘It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.

‘In Spain he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’

Torres refuted claims that Getafe had lodged a formal complaint following an incident where Jude Bellingham seemingly referred to Greenwood as a rapist during their team’s 2-0 loss to Real Madrid earlier this month.

‘Greenwood is dedicated to playing. We have not reported.

‘When the games end, I leave after ten minutes and I didn’t ask to be included in the game report.

‘I have not discussed this with Florentino [Perez, Real Madrid’s president] because there is nothing to talk about.’
