Erling Haaland fires brutal dig at Alexander-Arnold in trophy row ahead of Liverpool clash

Erling Haaland responded to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s remarks following the Liverpool defender’s assertion that his team’s trophies hold greater significance than those secured by Manchester City.

With the Premier League’s top two teams set to clash at Anfield on Sunday in an eagerly anticipated title showdown, Alexander-Arnold stoked the rivalry by expressing his views before the match.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, he said: ‘We’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

‘Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.

‘How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.’

However, Haaland has dismissed Alexander-Arnold’s remarks, arguing that Liverpool lacks an understanding of the sensation of winning a treble, as City accomplished last season. Despite this, he maintains that the comments will not sway him or his teammates as they prepare for their visit to Anfield.

The Norwegian forward looked bemused as the comments were read out to him, telling Sky Sports: ‘If he wants to say that, okay.

‘I’ve been here one year and I won the treble. It was quite a nice feeling, I don’t think he knows exactly this feeling.

‘So, yeah, that’s what I felt last season and it was quite nice, so yeah.’

Asked if the comments will add more spice to Sunday’s game, Haaland added: ‘They can talk as much as they want – or he can talk as much as he wants.

On the match itself, he said: ‘It’s going to be a great game. Liverpool are top of the league so they’ve been the best this season so far. ‘We have to try and play at our best.

‘I think City-Liverpool is a really special game in general, so it’s going to be a special game and it’s going to be a really important game.’
