Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has confirmed that Manchester United have made a transfer approach to sign him.
Jose Mourinho is in the market to sign a new central defender in this summer, and the Frenchman has been one of the players linked with a move United.
The France international worked under Mourinho at Real Madrid and helped the club win La Liga in his first season in Spain.
When asked by El Larguero if he had been contacted by Mourinho about a transfer, Varane replied: ‘No, not directly.
‘There were contacts, but not directly.’
After the signing of Alexis Sanchez, Mourinho said that he would be keen on strengthening other parts of his squad at the end of the current campaign.
‘That’s why I say that it’s bad for you [the media] because you like to have things to write and things to speculate, especially in the summer,’ Mourinho said in February.
‘But I don’t want attacking players so don’t speak about attacking players that are coming here because nobody is coming here.
‘We have Mata, Lukaku, Rashford, Martial, Alexis – I don’t want attacking players, so speculation in the summer you have to go to other areas.’
