Steven Gerrard ‘intrigued’ by possibility of becoming Newcastle manager

Steven Gerrard has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Newcastle manager Steve Bruce.

The fortunes of the club were almost instantaneously transformed yesterday after Mike Ashley’s controversial 14-year reign came to an end.

However, in his place, an ambitious Saudi-backed consortium has taken over, and they are ready to deliver the success Newcastle supporters have been starved in recent years.

They are without a win this campaign, current manager Steve Bruce was facing a losing battle to save his job even before the takeover.

The 60-year-old manager issued a defiant message on Thursday, but his fate looks to have been sealed with the new owners having an ambitious list of targets.

Rangers manager Gerrard is reported to be chief among those and the former England captain is said to be ‘intrigued’, according to the Daily Mail, at the prospect of taking over from Bruce.

Revealing her intentions yesterday, new chief executive Amanda Staveley said: ‘Obviously we bought this club with a view that we want the fans to get the trophies they deserve and we need to work with the fans to help us get there and that will take some time.

‘We’re not going to be winning the Premier League just yet and it’s going to take some time to build the infrastructure at all levels to allow us to challenge for trophies.’

Staveley confirmed she had spoken to Bruce and she insisted no decisions have been made about the manager’s future.

Bruce, meanwhile, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them.

‘That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way. I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.’
