Why Man Utd missed out on Sergio Reguilon transfer

Reguilon

Tottenham are close to signing Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon after hijacking Manchester United’s move for the Spaniard.

The 23-year-old is set to leave Real this summer after an impressive loan spell with Sevilla last season and United had been in talks with the La Liga champions for the last week over a possible £20m deal.

However, negotiations hit a stumbling block when Madrid insisted on including a buy-back clause, with the Red devils unwilling to agree.

And that has opened the door for Tottenham and the Athletic claim that a deal is now close to being struck that will see Reguilon move to North London on a permanent basis.

Real wanted a buy-back option on the Spanish left-back allowing them to sign him for less than £37m. They also wanted a clause allowing them to match any other bid that comes in for him.

Manchester United refused on both counts – but it is understood Spurs said yes to it and are now free to discuss personal terms with the player.

Tottenham have signed Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg so far this campaign but Jose Mourinho wants a new left-back after Danny Rose was given permission to leave the club.

Solskjaer had been keen on signing a good competition for Luke Shaw, who missed around four months of the campaign last term through injury.

However, Reguilon spoke with Mourinho in early September and convinced the player to join the club.

Zidane worked with Reguilon when he was managet of Real Madrid’s youth side, Castilla but the Frenchman is not convinced that he has what it takes to succeed at the club and has already informed him that he’s surplus to requirements.
