Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described Dayot Upamecano as a ‘very good player’ and talked about the prospect of seeing the defender in action when Manchester United face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old was strongly linked with a transfer move to Old Trafford throughout the summer, however, he ended up staying in Germany and even extended his contract until 2023.
According to reports, Upamecano’s new contract includes a bargain £36.5m buy-out clause which will become active next summer – and both United and Liverpool are still believed to be interested.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Leipzig, Solskjaer refused to be drawn on a possible move for the player, but conceded he is a top player.
‘There’s always rumours and speculation about other players and Manchester United,’ the Norwegian manager said. ‘I don’t want to comment on every player we’re linked to.
‘Since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.’
United began their campaign in Europe last week with an impressive 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain away at the Parc des Princes.
