Manchester United have made contact with the representatives of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara to discuss a transfer to Old Trafford, according to reports in Germany.

The 29-year-old informed the Bundesliga champions before the end of last campaign that he would not be renewing his contract at the club, which runs until 2021.

Liverpool had been favourites to sign Thiago Alcantara, with Jurgen Klopp holding discussions with the Spanish star earlier this month.

However, Klopp must now sell a senior player before Liverpool’s board can sanction a £27m move for Thiago but the German is content with his current squad.

Gini Wijnaldum appears to be the only player that could leave Anfield this summer wimdow but Klopp wants to keep the midfielder.

Liverpool’s reluctance to complete a deal has now opened the door to Manchester United, who have long term interest in Thiago.

According to Bild, the Red devils have not yet made an offer for the former Barca midfielder but they have already contacted his representatives to discuss a possible move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Thiago wants to experience a new challenge and though he would like to work with Jurgen Klopp, he is open to joining rivals Manchester United.

Bayern Munich said on the weekend that they expect offers for Thiago this week and Manchester United’s interest could force Liverpool into action on a possible transfer.

The Germans want £27 million for the Spain international, who is currently on duty with Spain national team.
