Liverpool’s Champions League U-turn is confirmed after new coronavirus rules

Liverpool will now make the trip to Denmark for their Champions League clash with FC Midtjylland, after the UK government eased their travel restrictions for elite athletes.

The Reds are due to travel to Midtjylland’s MCH Arena next month and that the squad would need to observe a certain period of self-isolation when they returned – this is in accordance with government guidelines aimed at reducing the spread of Covid-19.

Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park had been mooted as a possible venue for the game but it will now be played in Denmark after Midtjylland confirmed the new updates in an official statement.

The statement on Midtjylland’s official website, read: “The English authorities’ demands for quarantine when entering Denmark have recently raised doubts about the possibility of carrying out the planned Champions League match against Liverpool FC in Herning.

“We have therefore, in collaboration with UEFA and Liverpool FC, explored the possibilities for an alternative venue.

“[The] Westfalenstadion in Dortmund has, among other things, been in play, based on a geographical consideration as well as the requirement that the venue must be a current Champions League stadium.

“The English authorities last night eased the travel restrictions aimed at Denmark, so that elite athletes are exempted from quarantine upon entry from Denmark, and there is thus no longer any uncertainty associated with the settlement, so we can confirm that the match is played at MCH Arena as planned.

“We remain aware of the situation and are in constant dialogue with the relevant parties.”

Liverpool are currently the leaders of Group D with nine points, having won three matches and lost once from their opening four games.

Meanwhile, Midtjylland are bottom of the group and without a single win in their four games.
