Riyad Mahrez names seven teams that can win Premier League this season

Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez says seven teams can win the Premier League title this campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s side are bidding to defend the league title and win the English top-flight for the fifth time in six years.

Manchester City have made a good start to the 2022-23 campaign, amassing 29 points from their opening 12 league matches.

City are currently second on the Premier League table after Arsenal enjoyed a 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Tottenham recovered from successive league defeats to complete a comeback win at Bournemouth on Saturday and stay third, two points above Newcastle United, who continue to impress under Eddie Howe.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have only taken two points from their last three matches to slip out of the top-four places, with Manchester United now above Graham Potter’s side after beating West Ham on Sunday.

Fulham and Brighton are now seventh and eighth respectively, ahead of Liverpool who have won just a third of their league games this campaign.

Despite Liverpool’s issues, Mahrez still expects Jurgen Klopp’s side to challenge for the title and says the current top-six should also be viewed as contenders.

‘This season I think Arsenal are very good,’ Mahrez told Manchester City’s official website. ‘All of the top six really.

‘Even Liverpool, they are away from us at the moment, but I still think they can be there at the end of the season. All the top six [and Liverpool] can challenge us for the Premier League and all of the other trophies.’

While Mahrez expects Liverpool to challenge for trophies this season, Klopp says his team will struggle to finish in the top-four unless they improve.

‘You can’t qualify for the Champions League if you play as inconsistently as we do at the moment,’ Klopp said after Liverpool’s shock defeat to Leeds United. ‘We have to fix that.

‘So many things are unlike us in this moment. I am sorry it is like this, but that is the situation. I am not sure how deep you can dig, but we will. It is like it is and we will work on solutions.

‘We have to have a look at this game first, try to understand it a bit more and go from there.’
