Ferdinand reveals Chelsea star that would be his ‘dream signing’ for Man Utd

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has named a surprising Chelsea player as his ‘dream’ centre-back signing for the Red Devils.

The transfer window is already heating up with Premier League clubs starting to close in on some major deals.

United have had a second offer for Mason Mount rejected, while Chelsea have agreed a fee with Arsenal for Kai Havertz.

United are expected to back Erik ten Hag in the transfer market after an encouraging first campaign at Old Trafford in which they won the League Cup and finished third in the Premier League.

Ten Hag wants to sign a new striker and goalkeeper but Ferdinand claims his former club also need a new centre-back to provide cover and competition for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

When asked to name his ‘dream’ defensive signing, Ferdinand chose Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who spent last season on loan at Brighton.

Brighton have also expressed interest in signing the 20-year-old permanently but Chelsea intend to keep him at Stamford Bridge, even if he could be used in a deal for Moises Caicedo.

‘If I could get him, my dream one would be [Levi] Colwill, on-loan at Brighton from Chelsea,’ Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. ‘But I think Chelsea are going to keep him. I think they’ve seen how good he is now.’

Colwill trained with the senior England team last week following the withdrawals of Lewis Dunk and Jude Bellingham.

And he was already at St George’s Park as part of the England U21 squad ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

‘He had a good experience with the senior team,’ England U21 boss Lee Carsley said. ‘He was tired when he got here. The journey is tough.

‘He had a recovery session but has trained well ever since so he’s in a good position. I expect him and Taylor [Harwood-Bellis], along with the other centre halves, to have a good competition.

‘What I’ve noticed about Levi, and the others, is that they’re motivated and committed to being here. And not just being here but doing well. Hopefully we can get off to a good start.’
