Man Utd ‘receive approach’ from Premier League rival for Greenwood

A Premier League rival has reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Following a successful loan period at Getafe, a club based in Madrid, Manchester United is anticipated to capitalize on the forward during the upcoming transfer window.

Greenwood had been absent from the professional football scene for nearly two years due to allegations of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault. The 22-year-old maintained his innocence, and the charges were ultimately dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

After joining Getafe on loan the previous summer, Greenwood has delivered impressive results, contributing to 14 goals in 28 appearances in La Liga.

As the summer transfer window approaches, several prominent clubs are believed to be interested, with Manchester United’s valuation likely exceeding what Getafe can afford.

TEAMtalk has disclosed that an undisclosed Premier League team has shown interest in Greenwood, who hasn’t competed in the English premier division since the 2021/22 season.

Greenwood’s rise from the Manchester United academy generated considerable excitement at Old Trafford, where he demonstrated his capabilities with 22 goals in 83 Premier League matches. Nevertheless, it is broadly anticipated that he will continue his career with a club abroad.

Juventus is one of the clubs that have identified Greenwood as a key transfer target for the summer, and The Times has reported that Manchester United is aiming to secure £40 million from his sale.

Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United has slightly over a year remaining, although the club has the option to extend it by an additional year.

Other European giants, including Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, are also believed to be monitoring Greenwood’s notable performances in Spain.

However, if his valuation is not met, Manchester United is open to the possibility of reintegrating Greenwood into their squad at Old Trafford.

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe hinted as much shortly after completing his minority buy-in. He said: “I can talk about the principle, I’m not going to talk about Mason. I’m familiar with it. The principle is the important one because we will have other issues going forward.

“You’re dealing with young people ‒ they’ve not always been brought up in the best of circumstances ‒ who are very talented, they’ve got lots of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“We need to understand what the facts are. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach it. Is he the right type of footballer? Is he a good person or not?”
