Mail Sport revealed in April that United were close to finalizing terms with Cunha before triggering his £62.5 million release clause at Wolves. The Brazilian forward has made his intentions to leave clear for some time.
United manager Ruben Amorim has openly expressed his admiration for Cunha, having been spotted speaking with him following a 2-0 defeat at Molineux in December and again in the tunnel after the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.
Despite declaring that “every player” dreams of playing for United, Amorim has remained tight-lipped about the club’s growing interest in the Wolves striker.
Now, according to Uol, Cunha is nearing the completion of his move to Old Trafford, with United still maintaining financial flexibility ahead of the summer transfer window.
This season, Cunha has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Wolves, while also picking up a further seven assists.
Asked about Cunha last month, Amorim said: ‘I will not say anything about Matheus, because if I say one time I will have to say for any situation that is yes or no.
‘I will not comment on that. It’s hard to predict what is going to happen in the future.’
Man United legend Paul Scholes, meanwhile, has said that Cunha would have been wise to have chosen another destination.
Explaining why he ‘worries’ for the 25-year-old attacker in his TNT Sports column, Scholes wrote: ‘He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants.
‘He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with 15 league goals this season.
‘I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor.
‘Is he a centre forward or is he a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has quality and of course, it would be nice to sign him, but I worry about where he fits in.
‘You can sign the best three players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute, but they’ve got to start somewhere.’
