Mourinho working on all-out attack formation for must-win Newcastle match

Jose Mourinho is considering playing a 3-4-3 formation for Manchester United’s must-win match with Newcastle United on Saturday, according to reports.

The Red Devils are without a win in their last four games and Mourinho’s future at the club is looking increasingly in doubt.

United struggled to get a 0-0 draw with Valencia in the Champions League, playing a 4-3-3 formation with Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford on either flanks supporting Lukaku.

Mourinho was happy with the commitment levels of his front three but felt his midfielders were too slow in possession and could have been more creative to break down Valencia.

Metro.co.uk reports that Mourinho had his team working on a back three in training on Thursday with a view to playing a 3-4-3 formation against Newcastle.

Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay have both been tasked with playing defence so far this campaign and Matic could be asked to play alongside Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly in their next game.

Mourinho was unhappy with the pair’s distribution against Valencia and believes Matic’s greater passing range could help Pogba in midfield.

Matic’s deeper role could hand a chance for Fred to play alongside Pogba but Mourinho is also minded that Juan Mata could play there as United are expected to dominate possession.

With Lukaku, Sanchez and Rashford in attack supported by Pogba and one of either Mata or Fred, Mourinho feels his fragile team needs more firepower to turn results around.
